Phoenixville, PA

Phoenixville offers an amazing combination of small town living and a considerable history that predates the Declaration of Independence by 44 years. While enjoying decades as an industrial town initially known as Manavon, Phoenixville wasn’t formally established as a borough until 1849. This community of 16,518 residents is just 28 miles outside of Philadelphia at the intersection of the Schuykill river and French creek. The location gives it a calm demeanor while still providing easy access to a bustling big city.

The local economy of Phoenixville is built on a diverse mix of occupation that includes artistic endeavors. Much of the business activity is oriented towards visitors from nearby Philadelphia looking for a relaxing getaway with specialty boutiques or outdoor recreation readily available. With this healthy assortment of jobs, the borough provides a variety of reasonably-priced real estate that includes free-standing houses, townhomes, condominiums, and apartments. Three bedroom single-family dwellings often sell for low six-figure prices. Situated beyond the reaches of the urban landscape, Phoenixville offers newcomers plenty of rural pleasures like hiking, biking, and camping in the nearby French Creek State Park and Valley Forge National Park. The Schuykill river serves as a favorite destination for canoeists and kayakers.

For families thinking of moving to Phoenixville, the borough offers three public elementary schools along with a central junior high and high school. The schools have a good reputation and students can elect to attend the Pickering campus of the Technical College High School. Additionally, two charter schools, Phoenix Renaissance Academy and Buxmont Academy, and several private schools are available. In higher education, a local campus of the Delaware County Community College and the private University of Valley Forge are based in the town.

One additional bit of information to point out about the community is that many people have already seen it as it existed around 1958. The classic horror movie The Blob was partially filmed here. In fact, the town’s Colonial Theatre was prominently featured in the movie’s theater attack scene and Phoenixville commemorates this with an annual Blobfest.
